E is a science fiction novel set on Earth and on the imaginary world of E, so named because it is the fifth planet from its sun. Earth is a Ruined World and there is a widespread wish for a better world on which to begin again. This world (E) is duly provided, and its inhabitants set about ruining it as they had the other.
